I'm curious about your dental routine! What do you do for cleaning and what do you use for products? How often do you see a dentist and what kind of dentist? Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.

My question piggybacks on dental health - have you had experience with regenerative dental health from cavities and if so, what helped? We’ve tried black walnut tincture and a colostrum regimen. Curious about your experience here.

Hi Tara. I’ve had this question in my back pocket for a while and not sure where it fits. You have mentioned your solar dehydrator a lot and also said that you modified the plans that were out there because they didn’t work for you. Is there any chance you could explain it more or share a simple plan. I’d like hubby to build one to start saving all the nutritional goodness. We are a bit behind you so the nettle is just coming up and there is only dandelion to dry now but I’m already running out of space and don’t have a great drying situation!

Ok...I don’t really know how to formulate this question. But husband and I have been trying to figure out how to move toward a much more protein heavy eating pattern. Through your posts, I realized there ain’t no way in hell we are getting enough. (There’s my Texas coming out).

As the chef, I feel like I end up relying a lot on the filler of bone broth rice or potatoes for our meals to be enough.

Do you just typically serve very large portions of your protein or choice or do you include multiple protein sources?

I recognize and don’t like how much we use carbohydrates to supplement the meal so it’s adequately filling.

Hi Tara! The question is about my little daughter and nutrition. She just turned 4 years old, and her first foods were egg yolk, raw cream, raw cheeses, livers, meats, and fish eggs. She ate mostly only these things until she was about 2 when we introduced more vegetables and sourdough bread. She was fine with all of these foods until she got sick with what we assume was c****. It was very mild, no big deal but right after that she started snoring, and reacting to dairy, eggs, and gluten. She started getting little rashes around her mouth and heavy congestion and snoring. So I thought okay, I'll cut these things out and focus on meats while she's recovering from the inflammation. Then about 2 months later I tried to reintroduce and the same reaction happened. I was pretty devastated as you can imagine. We tried another time a few months later and same thing. It has now been about 1 year and it seems every time we reintroduce these foods we get a congestion reaction, but I am also so devastated as these foods were a main staple in her diet, specifically the dairy and eggs, she ate them everyday without fail. We now focus on pate's, ghee (which she can handle), meat, fish eggs, and some heavily cooked vegetables in ghee or lard and starches like sweet potato and squash and avocados (we live in California where they are in season almost all year round), but I just wanted to ask you if you had any thoughts on this, and also can I possibly get her proper nutrition if she indeed is now "allergic" to these foods. I am pretty sad about it all, and hope there's some change that can happen. I also wanted to mention that she is unvaccinated and we live in a rural area with fresh spring water and lots of sunshine and clean air. She wears natural fabrics and we try to do all the things like sleep on wool mattresses and avoid anything toxic including cleaning products or anything like that. The only toxic thing in our lives as I see it is a new car, as we have had a series of old cars that kept breaking down and finally gave in to a new car.

I want to say that I am totally obsessed with your Substack and am so grateful that you take the time (I imagine an enormous amount of time) to bring your thoughts, ideas, and wisdom to us. It is not only a balm for the soul to feel recognized and kinship but also gain new wisdom through your writing. Thank you so much!

Hi Tara :)

As always, thank you for all you do 💕

My question is - how was your experience with the super gut? Wondering if you just implement the yogurts and how that’s gone for you!

Hi Tara! I would love to know some things your daughter is feeding your grand baby now that she’s old enough for food. My daughter usually just eats a version of whatever we are eating, but I’m curious to know her perspective.

Also I would love a relationship Q&A next round. Thanks!

Hi Lili! Hope you don’t mind me sharing, I have recently had some success following Tara’s suggestion of eating liver for PMS (I think it was a food pic she had one time)...that helps me around my cycle. I’ve had the most help from a homeopath in addition to diet.

Any thoughts about sourcing colostrum powders? For the same reasons you mentioned with collagen I'm hesitant.

But, I was formula fed + all the other things my body has been through and am still working to heal allergies + eczema. So, I'd love to get my hands on some, but may just have to wait until I have some dairy animals of my own. Thank you! 💚

Next Q&A suggestion: idk what category this would fall into, but I've been very curious about your take on climate change since you briefly touched on it in an essay a few months ago. Maybe this would be a farming category? IDK

My greatest challenge at the moment is knowing how to cook, dry, prepare the wild foods and the well sourced foods I'm accessing. I don't understand how to get the balance you achieve in a meal and how to keep myself and my family full. I don't have access to duck so I'm held within pork, chicken, turkey and beef and wild venison or fish where as you say the hunting gods smile upon me. I also second the dehydrator, I'm unsure how to dry so much herb simultaneously. I will say I am digging into your vinegard and canning no sugar reccomended books but where im going is more resources ideas meal instruction on how to create the meals you make because I just stare and salivate and don't know how or where to start. Thanks for these sorry it got wordy!

My question is about water... what to look for when testing well water when deciding if you should move to a place? Do you only drink water from natural springs? Thoughts on filters like berkeys?

Thanks Tara!

Yes, I'm so interested in this. I was lucky in Cape Town to have an abundance of spring water, but since moving to London we've had to rely on a berkey. I'm not sure if it's an adequate filter, and I haven't found mineral drops I trust, but our water tastes dead 😞

Muriel's avatar

Second this, Grace! I just started drinking from a Berkey (fluoride filter and all) and now I wonder if there are good stuff it takes out along with the bad. I’d love to learn more about the structured water you mention, Tara. Thank you!

Disconcertingly, my berkey hasn't filtered much limescale (I love in an area with very hard water), so I worry what else is not filtering

For a future Q&A, I would like information about healthy home building products. We will be building a house soon and I don't even know where to begin. I'm concerned about all the off-gassing of products and how to go about finding reputable assessments of products. Allergies, forever chemicals, all that stuff. Thank you!

I’m dying to know your thoughts on fasting for younger women? I go through phases where I really align with the idea of fasting but I constantly hear how bad it is for me hormonally. Would you say that shorter daily fasts would be less harmful? Perhaps the odd prolonged fast?

I highly recommend Dr Mindy Pelz....you tube and acouple books. She has so much great information on how to fast and day with your cycle.

Amber's avatar

I second this recommendation. She just came out with Fast Like a Girl, which broke down the different phases of our cycle and how to support it with fasting during certain times, and also support it by not fasting during certain times (like when we’re making a lot of progesterone).

Along with this, I have wondered about fasting during pregnancy and breastfeeding but those are probably seasons it's best not to fast? That's what my gut tells me.

Expand full comment
Danielle DK's avatar

Yes, your gut is correct. It’s dangerous for the babies health to fast while pregnant and I have personal experience with fasting while nursing and my body stopped producing milk! It wasn’t enough calories to sustain the lactation process.

I was out on a slew of pharmaceutical medications ten years ago for what was diagnosed as postpartum psychosis. It took about a year for me to get off all of the meds except the antidepressant. About three months ago I started having some weird neurological symptoms and my Dr took me off the antidepressant and they went away. I have been doing a very low carb diet to help manage all of the anxiety and depression that has come with this, but I am still really struggling. Any suggestions for mental health? I am sure Antidepressant withdrawal is lasting a long time, but I am not sure what to do. I don’t eat grains, dairy, or eggs and I exercise and meditate regularly. I have had all of my nutrition levels checked and I am a little low on Folate but everything else was fine.

Thank you so much for any thoughts! ❤️❤️❤️
