Hello lovely humans!
Today I’m announcing a brand new addition to my Substack publication: the Slowdown Farmstead subscriber chat.
Substack has generously offered to allow me to be one of the chosen ones in trying out their new chat feature. At first I thought “no way”. I don’t want to spend more time at a screen and I don’t want to encourage anyone else to, either. But then I thought that this might be a way to share some little micro-moments that I often get requests for but can’t fit into how I’m using Substack.
I thought I’d try sharing things like meals I’m eating, daily humdrum recipes or the food preserving I’m doing, a picture here and there, a how-we-do-it process share every now and then, maybe open up a conversation about some dangerous things we’re all up to.😉 Kind of like the Instagram stories feature but it’s a group of us coming together.
Chats may occasionally be open to all subscribers. Paid subscribers will have access to all threads. In this way I can add another little “thank you perk” for your support and we can better ensure our conversations aren’t open to everyone on the internet (that tends to be where things get a little messy). I’ve left Instagram and I think this might be an altogether more connecting and robust way of communicating.
Chats are opened by me and closed after a few hours, maybe after a day or so. In that way, it’s not a virtual bulletin board. On my end, that makes it much more manageable. Chats can still be read after that time, just not responded to. You will need to download the Substack app to make it happen. Word on the street is that the chat function will eventually be doable from desktops.
I frequently read your comments in the comment section about how people feel a little more buoyed by the other commenter’s shared experiences and perspectives. Maybe we could get a little of that runoff here. It’s an experiment. Let’s see.
What do you think?
How to get started
Download the app by clicking this link or the button below. Chat is only on iOS for now, but chat is coming to the Android app soon.
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
I’ve already started my first chat thread so come on over and say hello!
Having another way to connect with you is going to be amazing
If it’s true that you’ll no longer be on instagram then I am admittedly sad (your posts were always at the top of my algorithm!) but I understand and appreciate you opening up this space for us 😌
