I just dropped my 12 year old son off at his teen naturalist program. Their group of 15 or so is hiking up our tallest mountain today. A beautiful day. One of the leaders asked my son if he had a cell phone. "No," he scoffed, "And if someone gave me one I'd tell them to take it back." The leader noted how kids around his age - some had them, some didn't. She proceeded to ask a few others. Turns out, her husband - hiking to the summit - didn't have a cell phone and they were trying to coordinate how they would communicate with the group that was taking the shorter route. Who knows what they decided? It's probable they decided they could just figure it out without phones. Or maybe a kid had one.

We have a lot of struggles in our home but screens/technology is one area we all seem to agree on. They just aren't a big part of our life. Our phones are tools like a hammer left out. Every once in a while someone might pick it up and play with it but mostly they are just there for when we need them.

The moon has been lighting up my house every morning when I get up around 5:00. No stumbling in the dark hoping I don't trip over a cat or an object left out as a hazard. Pure guidance from the skies.

Your message will be a wayfinder for some who have been convinced we need cellphones to operate. I’m certain that those of us who grew up without them, and I am grateful to include my children in that era, are needed to remind some of a time when we easily lived without.

How kind of the moon to guide your way over sleeping cats ❤️

My 16 year old also doesn’t have (and doesn’t want) a cell phone. ❤️

Oh hooray, congrats on finishing your preserving! What a marathon! I hope you have a luxurious winter rest in your snow camp and get to see your sweet granddaughter lots and lots. Your food cellar is stunning, I love seeing it every time you share. The magnitude of labor you and Troy put into its build and now the food within is not lost on me! You two are amazing.

Thank you for commenting on that, Saucey. You have such a thoughtful heart. It feels good, to be sure. I always have an eye towards what I haven’t accomplished and that’s something I’m changing about myself so your boost is much appreciated 🌞💕

The phones are listening to us. Last winter we were eating breakfast and my cell phone was sitting next to me turned off. My daughter made a comment about watches and I quoted the old Timex slogan. Later that day I was inundated with Timex ads. It was horrifying! I've got a kid in school and sports and all communication comes through apps (a lot of things can't be accessed on the website versions), so I feel stuck with my phone for a couple more years. I'd love to ditch it though.

That is horrifying!

I was downtown a few weeks ago trying to pay for a parking spot and the lit said I had to download their app to pay for parking. I drove to another spot but I worry about this trajectory.

I’ve heard of “smart” appliances that require apps, like your dishwasher won’t do certain cycles without it.

I was at a gas station trying to put air in my tires. They only accepted credit cards for a $2 air pump! It's getting ridiculous to say the least! I feel like a fly being caught in a sticky spider web. I hope we can all find ways to escape the imminent threat controlling of our every move!

Also! Oh my goodness the video tour of your root cellar!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I love seeing not only how you organize it but what you preserve all in one place! And your jar collection is beyond enviable 😍 watching the videos make me feel like I can do this. I always hear of people canning 80 jars of things but I love that yours is so varied based on what your family likes! I made 3 jars of apricot cherry jam and felt kind of silly only making that much. But it was still something we can pull out on a frigid winter day! Sending you a giant hug of appreciation for sharing this!

Hello dear Tara!

I'm so excited for the adventures your trailer will bring you two.

Mu guy designs and builds beautiful conversion vans, www.openroadupfitters.com. I'm so proud of him. I actually asked you and Troy on a Q&A a few years ago how to find a good man and I appreciated your time and reply. I got a really, really good one:)

Would your departure offline include here?

I think about this every day. I've mentioned because of our small businesses (I farm) feeling trapped to be online, which may or may not be true. I started an online Farmers Market that helps our farmers and community connect to their food. It's a REKO Ring and they're run through Facebook. And that brings good, as does this community.

So that's where I stick. Those tiny glimpses of light. But I would love to say my goodbyes to online, especially social media. And my cell phone. I think landlines are the dreamiest thing.

But then how would you or I share our writing, and connect with these good people? And share our food with so many?

It's a sticky whicket as an old friend would say. How do we know?

Oh Tara, yet again your heart and mind mirror my own. I have been musing on ditching my phone entirely and trying to figure out how to do everything without the internet. Like, you can still pay bills at the bank! You can listen to the radio for the weather forecast! You can get a book of maps for your area/province! And yet...it's the activities and connections I can't figure out. My 'old lady' soccer team uses an app for the schedule. My garden club uses email to plan meetings (by the way, the garden club is going SO well and I've met the coolest people! I just joined the board of directors for our tiny community association too. I'm giddy!)...but I feel the pull. I don't want any part of the tracking or listening. Or AI. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts and ideas about moving forward as they come! Surely we can figure this out together!

Do you do anything special to store your ceremonial chocolate from Giddyoyo?

No, it stores very well in glass. I have some in the house that’s four years old that’s still great.
