I’ve been so curious to hear your thoughts about phytic acid / anti-nutrients in the seeds we use in herbalism/culinary spices? For example, fenugreek, coriander, fennel, anise, etc. I’ve never hear anyone talk about phytic acid for herbs, and I tend to feel that plants that have been used so long as medicine in many different herbal traditional wouldn’t be so damaging… but it doesn’t add up with the explanation of phytic acid that I have heard. Also, just out of curiosity, do you/would you avoid goji berries because they are a nightshade?
Your thoughts on detoxing while nursing/pregnant? (Taking binders like clay/charcoal, parasite cleanses?) What about giving binders to babies & children? Would love to hear what things (supplements/binders/etc) your daughter gives her daughter!
Thank you so much! I subscribed here a month ago and am a little embarrassed to say that I’ve pretty much made it through all your archives on here…. 🙃 gobbling up all of your writings & Q&A’s with so much gratitude! It is exactly what I have been seeking on so many levels, and I already feel like a new, revived woman with so much inspiration. I don’t have enough words of gratitude for what you are doing here 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 lots of love from France! p.s. My first “live” Q&A—so exciting! 🤗
I second this question if you please dear Tara! I know you’re normally pressed to only answer one per person, so hoping to ask this as well so it gets an answer! ❤️🙏
“Your thoughts on detoxing while nursing/pregnant? (Taking binders like clay/charcoal, parasite cleanses?) What about giving binders to babies & children? Would love to hear what things (supplements/binders/etc) your daughter gives her daughter!”
Okay so this may be a long shot ! what are the chances that you will do a book signing of some sort ? Maybe for your paid subscribers ? A girl can dream … ;)
hi tara! 💛 we are in the process of renovating our old farm house. our plan is to add a mud room and upstairs bath with a claw foot tub, but leave the rest of the footprint the same. i’m curious what your non-negotiables would be for rebuilding a home. i want our space to be as healthy as possible for us and our kids. we will use non toxic paint, real wood floors etc but what other things do you find are important for the health of a home? with love, chamisa.
QUESTION- Tara, please tell me all about your strength training journey? What does your routine look like? How many days? How much do you lift? What exercises? How often? Do you train when you bleed? How many calories do you have when you are working out and on rest days? Do you rest? TELL ME EVERYTHING please :)
Hi Tara! I’d love to hear you talk about how you find the balance between being aware and informed with current going’s on in the world while also staying present and engaged in your life. How you’ve found a balance for yourself with the trappings of technology and the shininess of all the “info” right at your fingertips
I would love to hear you share some about what it has looked like to build and maintain your community. I find it incredibly hard to connect with folks now that I live rurally, as I come from the city and am more used to suggesting a low-stakes meet up in so-called third places. Those places don't exist here and so it feels like the option generally is inviting someone to my house. Which I loved to do in other phases of my life, but now it's always a mess because I'm a single mom and full-time farmer and part-time employee. I know I desperately need people in my life but can't figure out how to build those relationships when it feels like I only manage to see people once every few months. I'd love to hear any tips on how to first find the folks, and second invest in these essential relationships in a way that hopefully doesn't just require me to host everytime 🙃 Thank you, thank you Tara for the energy you put into this online community!!
One thought for a "neutral" meet up is to go for a walk/hike somewhere. No one needs to clean, make tea, etc. And walking and talking is such a great way to get to know people and develop relationships. Hopefully rurally means you have access to quiet street or trail.
Thanks for chiming in! I agree that chatting while moving is so low-key and lovely. This is another piece that feels so different out here - there are no sidewalks and people drive so fast on these windy two-lane roads! There are some state parks with trails in various directions, all at least 45 min away. We don't even have any lakes or rivers with public access for swimming within 40 min of here. There are only a few sparse giant-farm-turned-neighborhood where roads are a little more quiet, but maybe that's the best option, especially with kids in tow...
I had some thoughts on this topic about community, although as a Mennonite I basically have a built in community around me. Which is a great privilege I understand that and also comes with its tradeoffs ie I'm expected to do/perform in certain ways or show up for my people.
One thing I thought of is that my relationships, even with my community, tend to go in cycles seasonally. In the middle of summer when we're raising livestock and garden produce ans trying to preserve all the things, I stay home more. Time is a huge investment into good relationships. Alternatively I will also often get together with friends or family to do big canning or gardening days. In the winter we get together more frequently but we're still often working. Like sewing projects, helping each other with cleaning, baking, meat preserving etc. Maybe that's a Mennonite weakness to constantly feel like I need to be working or doing something with my hands🥴
However I made a friend through Tara's threads here, simply by leaving a comment on someone's comment. Now we've gotten togsbtet a couple of times already, looking for leeks, canning etc. She helped me become part of an organic buying club. I think like Tara said, sometimes you have to stick your neck out ans try some things.
Also I don't know if you're a praying person but I have even within my community spent some lonely years and times of begging God to bring me a friend. In time He has thkugh not always as soon as I thought he should have.
I truly hope you find some good relationships! They are priceless and can make all the difference in life's joys and sorrows!
I missed this earlier, but thank you! Love hearing your experience. There's a fair amount of Amish around me and I hold a tiny bit of jealousy for the built in community! I've tried hosting monthly potlucks, hosting regular drop in playdates for other friends with small kids, coordinated a tomato canning day, hosted an herbal first aid workshop, creating a dinner club, tried to get a Lent study group together (that didn't get off the ground) etc. People come and have a great time and then I never hear from them again. My church is 40 minutes from me and everyone there lives in the city, but I've sort of given up on finding community in my area for now and just keep hoping if I show up to church regularly and engage authentically, then maybe something will develop there. It's at least a welcoming space with humans! I'm in KY, outside of Louisville. ♥️
I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and was wondering whether you have any birth and postpartum tips. Because of financial reasons, we will end up going to a hospital for the birth. We also cannot get a doula. I am planning on laboring at home until the last possible second and will have the support of my husband and mom. Any mantras, tips, or books you recommend for this miraculous event?
As to postpartum, I’m going to take a month off prior to the due weeks (I loathe the concept of a due date) to rest and also to meal prep for my husband and I. My goal is to make approximately 2 months worth of food (broths and soups and organ meats) so I can truly recover and care for the baby while my husband takes care of me. Other than meal prepping and setting boundaries with family members, is there anything else you suggest?
Such an exciting time 😍 the food prep sounds amazing that would definitely be my number one. I’d add in warmth, it’s a cold state postpartum so do everything to stay warm, covered feet, belly especially. For family who want to be involved not just boundaries but actually tell them what they can do to help…instead of take the baby for you to have a break maybe they can fold the washing or vacuum while you lay with your baby. My midwife said to me, no one should be arriving without bringing food, or coming to do a chore etc. coming to “see” the baby isn’t supportive or helpful. ❤️
So true on the family part, Katy. It’ll be tough because they’re coming from abroad (parents and my five siblings) where culturally, help of that sort is not really a thing. I’m trying to lay the foundation early on and will have one of my parents as the “bulldog” to enforce the boundaries (which include coming to help, not to see the baby only). Thanks for the reminder to keep warm! That’ll certainly take some intentionality.
I love this question Sophie! I asked the similar question when I was pregnant with my second and third. I got a lot of beautiful book recommendations and will share a couple that the community told me about before. Someone also recommended Christian Hypnobirthing class which goes through the physiological process of birth. I had no idea how my hormones and the babies work together so beautifully.
My number one mantra was: “I can do anything for 60 seconds”!
Any book by Ina May was wonderful prep and TThe Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care is still a favorite!
Congratulations on that sweet beautiful babe and already being the best mother for your babe ❤️
Thank you so much for these suggestions, Heather! I’ll have to look into the hypnobirthing. I was kind of in between the Bradley Method and Hypnobirthing but have overwhelmingly heard more positive things about the latter.
I love that mantra - it’s so true! I’ll add it to my growing collection.
I already have some of Ina May’s books, but had not heard of The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child. I’ll see if I can find it secondhand. Thanks so much for taking the time to provide these tips. Any bit of help is so encouraging ❤️
Do you have friends/family who could visit postpartum, and pop in a load of laundry, or do up your dishes/clean the kitchen? What are your little non-negotiables of housework that you need done to keep your sanity...and who will help with them? This was so huge for me. I think people WANT to help, but don't know where to start. Boundaries are great, but so is asking for help and allowing for that vulnerable communication of need in a soft time. Does your man know where you'll expect/want him to pick up your "slack" so you can rest with baby?
I LOVE the book Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage by Rachel Reed. Applicable at home and hospital, also gives you a good idea of behaviours and rituals that often happen in hospital settings.
Thank you, Liz! I will have some family come and help but I think getting clear on the non negotiable will be the key to my sanity. I’m currently bedridden because of a medical procedure I got done a couple of days ago, and it’s really brought into sharp focus what keeps me sane. Perhaps creating a list of things I absolutely need will be helpful to those wanting to help but not knowing how. I think also I’ll need to work on not feeling like a burden or a nuisance. It’s so ridiculous to me that anyone postpartum would feel that way after they just brought about life! But, it could happen and it’s worth preparing for.
Thanks for the book recommendation as well! I’ll add that to my reading list.
Hello Tara! I find myself fumbling with Weck jar lids and clips as I hotpack and can. Similarly to how you made a video of wrapping meat last year, I'd love a video clip of you hotpacking and/or canning. And, do you have a general vinegar : honey (or other sweeter) ratio that you use for pickling fruit?
To piggy back on this question (if I may) since it's related... what ratios for vinegar canning do you use? Do you hot pack can with vinegars?
I don't have adequat cold storage yet, so I'm canning vinegar pickles in addition to my ferments. Although I admit it makes me sad to kill all the beneficial beasties with the heat used.. is there there a temp that works for sealing cans but limits waste of nutrients?
(I may have missed this info in a previous post, I have a lot to catch up on this winter..)
Hi Tara! Wow so many questions I feel hesitant to add another one but thank you for doing this.
My question is on weight loss: I have been doing the 'right' things, moderate carb, strength training, lots of protein, broths, liquids, movement yet I am struggling to lose any weight that I gained in my 3rd postpartum. That baby is now 1.5 years old and im no longer breastfeeding. I know I'm not at a healthy place. I know losing weight is nuanced and complicated but in your opinion is there usually something that is overlooked?
I 'd love to know everything you 've got on how to prevent cancer and how you would go about it if you had it. Dark theme I know, it's just so much of it around.
Hi Tara! Would love to know what toothpaste you use? I think you have mentioned before you make it, if so what are the ingredients you use? Please and thank you! :)
Also recently was gifted from a friend the River Cottage Meat Book as per your recommendation. It is AMAZING! What a brilliant cook book!!!!! Wondering however, in the book, he uses a meat grinder for making mince etc. do you have a grinder recommendation? Do the cast iron hand grinders work well in your opinion?
Hey Tara and community! Tara, what are your thoughts on retirement funds like 401Ks and IRAs? I'm in the US and everyone I know agrees investing in the stock market is the best option for retirement. I hate the idea of putting money towards companies like Blackrock but I really don't see any alternative options presented. In general, what are your thoughts on this idea of saving for retirement?
For all the likeminded folks in this community, what are your general thoughts towards retirement funds? Has anyone been successful with alternative routes that don't involve the stock market?
Have you heard of the Solari Report? Catherine Austin Fitts is truther in the financial world that has survived much government persecution ans has much to say about global economics, digitization ans privacy. She is a sage financial advisor with much research https://home.solari.com/ - Ive heard her give many alternatives to investing in Black rock, investing locally, in such things as water wells and farms. Her company advises people privately.
Hi Tara, wondering if you have any advice for dealing with Athlete's Foot? My partner has been struggling with it for a while, he does manual labor for work, and he'll swap socks throughout the day to try to mitigate any sweat making it worse, but it's still pretty bad. We've tried a black walnut hull tincture both topically and orally which has helped a bit. My thought is that skin issues like this can be linked to gut health, but because it is so localized to his foot and made worse when his feet are in steel toe boots all day, I don't really know where to start. Thanks to you or anyone else that wants to chime in!
Maybe this will help you, my husband used to have a lot of athlete’s foot but never since I got him into applying tea tree oil after every shower (and he showers almost every morning). It’s been more than a decade and not one relapse!
Oh how exciting - I actually caught the call for questions IN TIME this go round! My question is: what do you do with the fat that rises to the top of your broth? I tend to get quite a bit with the joint bones that come from our beef farmer.
I save some for frying eggs in little glass jars, then also I slowly cook and strain some through cloth to make my own lotions & lip balm..I add coconut oil to make it more solid at room temp and a tiny bit of essential oil like orange or lemon to make it smell good. You can probably freeze it to use later, add to steaks, feed some to cats, dogs and chickens love it to make their meals more nutritious.
Thank you for hosting another Q&A. What are your personal feelings on preventative cancer screenings? How do you feel about pap smears?
I’ve been so curious to hear your thoughts about phytic acid / anti-nutrients in the seeds we use in herbalism/culinary spices? For example, fenugreek, coriander, fennel, anise, etc. I’ve never hear anyone talk about phytic acid for herbs, and I tend to feel that plants that have been used so long as medicine in many different herbal traditional wouldn’t be so damaging… but it doesn’t add up with the explanation of phytic acid that I have heard.
